One extended voyage through the Australian Coast was terminated following the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was left behind by the vessel on a isolated coastal location.

Suzanne Rees had been hiking on the remote island with other travelers from the vessel, but broke off from the party for a rest. The liner departed without her and went back several hours later after the personnel became aware the woman was not present.

A large-scale search operation located her person the next day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, in coordination with law enforcement and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the shipping company announced that guests and staff on the vessel were told that the continuation of the cruise had been called off due to the "tragic passing and prior engine troubles".

Via official communication, he added that guests would be issued a full refund, and said the company was working "to coordinate the travel back of the travelers via chartered flights".

Officials also published an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Commander" banning any new passengers from entering the liner.

The official said that they would inspect the liner in the port city upon its coming back.

Sequence of Occurrences

The vessel first departed the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the voyage at the time of the senior passenger's passing. The remote island was the first stop on the itinerary.

Travelers on the ship - who generally pay large sums of money to take part in the voyage - were ferried there for a day trip with the possibility of hiking or snorkeling.

Family Response

The offspring of the deceased woman said that her family was "shocked and grieved that the ship left Lizard Island after an organised outing without my mum".

Through her comments, she described her mum as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a participant of a walking organization.

"From the little details we have been told, it appears that there was a failure of attention and ordinary reasoning," she mentioned.

She continued that she desired the examination would be able to determine what "the company should have performed that might have preserved Mum's being".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a very hot period, and she became unwell on the uphill trek," she explained.

"They requested her to return, without accompaniment. Then the vessel sailed away, apparently without performing a roll call.

"During some point in that process, or soon after, mum succumbed, by herself."

Company Reaction

Through an announcement, the Head verified that the organization was "collaborating extensively with officials to support their investigation".

He stated that the organization was "very regretful that this has happened" and had extended its full support to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Standards

The ship caters for up to 120 travelers with nearly fifty crew, according to official data. It was specially constructed to access remote areas of the Australian coast and is fitted with "tenders" - small boats used to transport passengers on land visits.

Incidents of this nature are rare, and liners have systems to record which passengers are getting on or leaving, according to industry experts.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship simply isn't an option," an authority remarked.

Vessel operators take these methods extremely carefully and have "clever tech in place to stop such occurrences from occurring," the expert further stated.

"This is presumably a surprising - and sad - one-off."
